"COWBOY ON THE RIVER"- CURT GOWDY

For those in their 50s and older, many will probably recognize the name “Curt Gowdy.” Many grew up watching and listening to this man as he announced the Super Bowls, dialogue for the Olympics competitions for decades, on Wide World of Sports, and most memorably, the life-long voice of the Boston Red Sox. Many also remember Mr. Gowdy because of his famous “American Sportsman” show about hunting and fishing with some of the most famous sports figures and celebrities of all time. He was a “sportsman’s sportsman.” Among his peers and co-workers through the years, he was known as the “Cowboy Behind the Mic.”

This is a commissioned piece that Denny was asked to do some time ago. After Mr. Gowdy passed away in February 2006, the family requested that he render this piece for several upcoming memorials and charity events in Mr. Gowdy’s honor. His daughter, Cheryl, requested that Denny “paint the man” in his true elements, so it was so. The photography that was used as reference was provided by the family and was one of Curt’s favorites. In it, Mr Gowdy is show sitting along a trout stream in Wyoming wearing his favorite Stetson, a turquoise bolo tie, his favorite antelope pin, and holding his prized flyrod and reel. The Gowdys asked to title this piece, “The Cowboy On The River.”

This original measures 18”x24”, done in traditional oils, painted edge-to-edge on Ampersand gesso-covered Masonite board. The original has been purchased by the Gowdy family.
