CHARLES
BOLIN-QUICKDRAW ARTIST |

Charles Bolin from
Deland, Florida, which is near Daytona Beach, belongs to an
organization called "Single Action Shooting Society." "Single
action" describes the type of firearm that they use for their
competition. This piece of "Quickdraw Artist," is oil , on a
"Clayboard," (Gesso-covered Masonite). I placed Mr. Bolin in
another background. I used a rough concrete wall which was better
suited than the one he was photographed in. Here is just the
background. It took almost 20 hours to get it just the way I wanted
it. |

The competition consists of the
shooters being timed and scored on the individuals shooting at steel
targets. It's very interesting and really cool to watch!
Leigh and I were invited to
one of their meets this past December where several of the members, men
and women, so graciously posed for Leigh's camera. Each signed releases
for us to use their images for my portraits. These portraits from that
shoot will be featured in my show that will be at the Booth Western Art
Museum in Cartersville, Georgia this September. These people were all
"class act, down-to-earth" as could be. Hopefully a couple will even show
up for the show.

I have started the face. I
waited a day or so for the oil to dry. I am using a drying agent, which
does speed things up some. This is about 10 more hours. |

 |
This is after working most of
today. I went in and detailed his beard and some of the shadow areas. I
got a start on his shirt and vest. Another 10 hours. |
|
Here are seven hours of
detailing the hat, hair, beard and vest. These are about the way I
want them...or maybe not...I also roughed in the type on the badge. |
 |
 |
This is another seven
hours to rough in the "ultra-shiny" Colt and the hands. The Colt was
so shiny and reflective, you can see the landscape behind Leigh and
the camera. |
|
This is the arm of
Charles' shirt and leather wrist guard roughed in. Another four
hours |
 |
 |
Here a
picture of yesterdays and some of today's work. I have roughed in
the belt area under his left arm. I have also roughed in his pants
and holster. Bold move for me. Working on more than one area at a
time... |
